To Construct Retaining Walls Huntsville AL Is The Place To Go

By Gregory Russell

Retaining walls are a kind of walls that are constructed in a place for the purposes of supporting soil mass in a lateral position. The reason for supporting the soil laterally is so that the soil level on either side of the wall can be differed. This way, soil on a slope is maintained in a position that it would not be able to remain naturally. When in need of retaining walls Huntsville AL should be the place to visit.

Five main types of these walls exist even though there may be many others. The five major ones are gravity, bored pile, anchored, cantilevered, and sheet piling walls. The gravity variety is able to support weight because they rely on their own weight. Materials used to make them vary from place to place, but include concrete, wood, stones, and metal among others. Several materials may also be integrated together to make a single wall. The base is usually wider than the top to make the wall appear wedge-like, which improves its stability and makes it capable of resisting more weight.

A cantilevered wall is constructed to look like a capital letter T that is inverted. These structures retain soil by converting horizontally applied pressure to be applied vertically. To make them to support more weight, buttressing is usually done to the wall. In comparison to a gravity wall, cantilevered wall required very little material to be constructed.

A sheet piling wall is suitable for use in tight spaces and soft soil. Construction is done using various materials, including wood planks, steel, and vinyl. These materials are driven into the ground at the proposed position of the wall. The construction material is driven so that 66 percent of the length goes into the ground while only 33 percent remain above the ground. The length of material driven into the soil can be varied depending on various factors.

A bored pile retaining wall is constructed by collecting a series of bored piles after the excavation of excess soil. Materials like reinforcing beams, reinforcement layer, shot crete, soil improvement operations and earth anchors can also be added in the setup. In situations where sheet piling is used as a construction solution, then this method is practical but due to noise levels one cannot use pile drivers.

Anchored wall is applicable in various construction settings. The wall is anchored into the soil behind it using cables. Installation of the cable can be done using various methods. It takes technical expertise to be able to install the anchors properly, especially if the soil load involved is huge.

Retaining walls serve several purposes on a property. First of all, they help to keep soil in place. Losing too much soil close to the foundation of a building can cause serious problems. Thus, by constructing this wall, one preserves the value of the property and saves themselves from possible future expenses on maintenance.

Soil erosion can also be prevented effectively using these structures. Controlling erosion this way is particularly important when farming is done on slopes. Plants can attain deep roots by having deep soils around them. This improves productivity. Without proper care, slopes can be heavily eroded.
